African Violet Care

Light
Phalaenopsis like bright indirect light. A north or east facing window is a good choice. Direct light will burn the leaves in most seasons. They also do well under artificial lighting.

Temperatures
Temperatures should be inbetween 75 and 85 degrees F during the day, and above 60 degrees at night. Higher temperatures encourage growth, but should include higher humidity and air movement as well. Cooler temperatures for several weeks in fall encourage flower spikes.

Potting
Phals like a well draining mixture like bark or moss. Some people use stones. Experiment a bit and see what works for your conditions and watering habits. Repotting is usally done in spring, once every 1 to 3 years. When repotting, remove all the medium and trim the unhealthy roots. After repotting keep the plant in a more shady spot for a bit.

Watering
These plants should be watered in the morning so the crown can dry out during the day. They do not like to dry out completely, but wait until the medium is almost dry throughout the pot before watering thoroughly.

Fertilizing
Fertilizing should be done on a regular schedule with a high nitrogen fertilizer. You can use a quarter strength of the recommended with everything watering, or fertilize full strength once or twice a month.
