African Violet Care

Light
Direct light can burn the leaves. A north or east facing window is best, especially in summer. Turn the plants once in awhile for more even growth. Violets also do well in artificial light. Two full spectrum bulbs are preferred, about 12 inches above the plants.

Temperature
African violets like 65 to 70 degrees F at night, and 10 to 15 degrees higher during the day. They like high humidity.

Potting
Potting mix is available, or you can make your own. One suggestion is one part soil, one part sphagnum peat moss, and one part perlite. Experiment with mixes and see what works for your growing conditions and your watering style.

African violets aren't picky about the container, as long as there are holes in the bottom.

Watering
There are many ways to water, but my preferred method is to stick my finger in the dirt a half inch or so and water when the soil just starts feeling dry. They like to be moist, but not wet.

Fertilizing
Unless you are growing under lights, fertilizing can be eliminated in winter. During the other seasons, follow the directions on the container of your preferred fertilizer. Fertilizer made for african violets or blooming plants is preferred.
